Hot Spot AT&T Unite 4G LTE Mobile WiFi Hotspot (AT&T)
Hot Spot AT&T Unite 4G LTE Mobile WiFi Hotspot (AT&T)
I picked this up at my local AT&T store last
week. I needed a reliable hotspot with fast Internet access for my
frequent travels away from home, mostly for my laptop and whichever
tablet I have on hand (over the years I have acquired an iPad, a Samsung
Galaxy Tab, and most recently an Asus VivoTab - basically a more
compact version of Microsoft's Surface RT). After relying for years on
spotty Internet access at Starbucks, McDonalds, and anyone else offering
somewhat free WiFi - and often being frustrated with limited
availability or slow/dead connections - I had, last year, started
tethering through my iPhone on an AT&T DataPro plan, but I didn't
like how quickly it would kill my phone's battery. So, I finally took
the dive into a dedicated hotspot on my AT&T plan, and I love the
service and the AT&T Unite hardware so far. The 5GB plan is
expensive, at $50 per month plus $10 more for each 1GB of over usage,
but I have been able to justify it for the work that I am able to get
done with it. Here are my impressions of the device and service:

This is definitely a disappointment and a waste of $200+, so buyer beware!
Here are the gotchas:
1.
It does not work on 3G, not even a little. I bought it for a rural
area where 4g is not available. Documentation stated that it worked in
those areas. Not so. I had an older Mobile hotspot that was great but
after several years use, no longer held a charge. Newer means not
compatible with slower speeds.
2. I bought the device from Amazon
rather than getting locked into a contract. But then the next gotcha.
In order to get wireless service, the telecommunications company (in
this case Verizon) has to send a little SID card. Depending on the deal
of the minute, you're looking at connection fees in addition to data
usage fees along with this fee and that fee, all because you don't have a
contract.
3. Finally I decided it wasn't worth the monthly charges
when it didn't work where I needed it. So without a contract, all I had
to do was cancel, right? Ha-hah! Gotcha again! Anyone who has tried
to cancel any service with Wireless companies know how difficult it is.
All the handy and convenient ways of signing up or upgrading service
are not available. You must call the "Mother, may I" line, endure the
transfers to the super secret cancellation department, doggedly call
back when they drop you. THEN, be prepared for the computer being down,
we'll offer a discount, and the myriad of other stall tactics. When
and if they process the cancellation, be sure to check the bill closely
for the monthly or other service charge. Just like Freddy Krueger, it's
back, again and again.
It's good this thing is the size of a hockey puck, because that's all it's good for!

Currently I use an iPhone 5 with unlimited data,
1400 shared calling minutes, and no texting. I use Google Voice for
texting, along with iMessages and Google Hangouts.
With this
JetPack, if I remove the nano-Sim card from my iPhone 5 and pop it in
here--I can use shared data on my phone, laptop, and iPad. Mostly I
want to be able to use the data on my laptop.
Caution: You
should use a nano SIM to SIM adapter, but I eyeballed my nano SIM it and
placed it in the SIM slot and allowed for where the spacer would put
it and it worked fine. I have an adapter on order.
I up and
download speeds over 7Mbps. I had a bit of trouble logging on to change
my password--the password is visible if someone were to pick this up
and hit a few buttons. I was unable to logon using the recommended
method. http://my.jetpack
So I tried 192.168.1.1 and that got me
right on and I changed the password. I may change it again as I don't
like that anyone can pickup this device and read your password in
seconds.
It works on one band or another--not both, I changed mine to the 5GHz band.

Faster than the previous-generation hotspot, and gets better LTE signal.
Also the chipset inside this is supposed to support LTE Advanced once
Verizon deploys it, so we won't have to upgrade to a new hotspot to take
advantage of faster speeds when LTE comes along! Everything seems to
work fine with this hotspot. Well worth it. Don't buy an older
generation one though; they've been plagued with problems. This is the
first generation Jetpack that has given us a stable connection that
doesn't drop out.
